Energy Efficient Water Heater Options
Your water heater is one of the biggest energy users in your home. The traditional water heating system was designed to keep large amounts of water heated at all times using electricity or gas sources. This is obviously not energy-efficient and can be a drain on your wallet, as well as the environment. Two options that are more energy-efficient are on-demand hot water and solar water heaters.
On-demand hot water. This system works on a as-need basis. It has been popular in Europe since World War II. This system will save energy and is cost-efficient, but you will still be on a power grid. Propane systems will work better than electric ones, although propane costs have doubled recently. If your water requires treatment, it will need to be treated before it enters the hot water treating system.
Solar water heaters. This water system only requires a couple of solar panels and can heat water throughout the year. Cloudy days will require more reliance on your backup electric or propane system. The tax incentives for a solar water heater will pay for the system within 3 to 7 years.
